STAPLES - The Lakewood Health System Foundation recently distributed 510 bicycle helmets to area children through its annual program "Helmets Worth Wearing."
Children of all ages as well as adults are encouraged to wear a helmet during wheeled activities like riding bike, inline skating, skateboarding or riding a scooter. In addition to a free helmet, children received tips for safe riding and were properly fitted for their appropriate size. Helmet distribution locations included Staples, Motley, Pillager, Eagle Bend, Browerville and Verndale.
Heidi Chapman, Lakewood Health System Foundation director, fit Danny Heldman with a new helmet on May 14 at Lakewood's Pillager clinic.
Volunteers and police officers assisted in explaining to children that when worn properly, bicycle helmets are effective in protecting against head injury.
Other important bicycle safety tips, such as obeying road signs, using hand signals, watching for road hazards, using caution in wet weather, also were emphasized at Helmets Worth Wearing.
There are extra helmets available for those unable to attend a helmet clinic. To receive your free helmet or for more information about "Helmets Worth Wearing" call the foundation at (218) 894-8503.
