Brainerd International Raceway unveils a new event this weekend that features Outlaw Drag Racing, which has been a popular attraction during the annual Show and Go and Coca-Cola Muscle Car Shootout events at BIR.
It's the Index Class Eliminator, the first chance for fans to see cars that compete in the Outlaw Drag Racing classes: Outlaw, Pro Outlaw, King Street and Real Street.
These cars can cover BIR's quarter-mile drag strip in 6 to 7 seconds and top out at more than 200 mph. They crank out the kind of horsepower that pulls the front wheels off the ground when they launch from the starting line.
In the past, Outlaw cars competed at BIR for prize money and bragging rights, but now they'll also compete for series points in the three-race Outlaw Drag Racing Series, which is new for BIR this season.
Outlaw drag racing will be featured during the Index Class Eliminator event Friday through Sunday at Brainerd International Raceway.
The Show and Go and Coca-Cola Muscle Car Shootout are the other two legs of the series. At the end of the series, class champions will be crowned based on their points.
In addition to the Outlaw cars, the Index Class Eliminator will also feature cars that will compete in eight index classes. Winners of the eight index classes will compete against each other for the title of Index Class champion. Up for grabs is $16,000 in cash and prizes.
"We're really excited about this new race for a number of reasons," BIR owner Jed Copham said. "We added it because of the success that we've had with the Show and Go and Muscle Car Shootout over the years. A third race gave us the ability to create the Outlaw series where racers can compete at all three events and earn series points toward a championship. It'll be very exciting for the drivers and the fans alike."
More than 400 cars, trucks, bikes and snowmobiles are expected to compete and will come from throughout the Midwest.
