Day was turned to night on Memorial Day as towering spring thunderstorms rolled over the region during the noon hour, bringing heavy rain and large hail. Damage, however, was slight.
30 years ago (1979)
A new boat was destroyed but two men escaped any serious injuries near Moonlite Bay on Crosslake. The boat hit a point of land at high speed, flew through the air and clipped off several trees before landing 47 feet on shore and catching fire.
40 years ago (1969)
Bob Nasby, St. Paul, landed some lunker walleyes on opening weekend, but topped that with this weekend's haul. His stringer from Stoney Lake near Hackensack weighed in at: 9-2, 7-7, 7-5, 7-3, 5-3 and 4-6, for a total limit of 40 pounds, 10 ounces.
60 years ago (1949)
The Brainerd Braves open their home baseball season tomorrow against Little Falls. Bud Smilonich, who hurled a magnificent 10-inning, 2-1 victory over Randall two weeks ago will take the mound for Brainerd.
80 years ago (1929)
Thousands of people, young and old, will unite in paying homage to the memories of the nation's war dead tomorrow. Albert Fox, one of seven living Civil War veterans in Brainerd, will deliver the proclamation.
100 years ago (1909)
The handball courts have been established in the YMCA gym and this new game will doubtless become a fad here. It is said to be one of the best exercises for jogging the liver of a run down business man.
