Two nonprofits partner to help low-income families
RREAL recently launched a partnership with Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity to provide comfortable, energy-efficient homes to low-income families.
In this first joint effort, RREAL installed a two-panel solar-powered furnace system on a Habitat home under construction in Pillager. The SPF system is a supplemental solar air heating system that is designed to reduce a family's heating load.
The system will provide a long-term reduction in heating fuel use and costs to the family whose "sweat equity" is helping to build the home. This supports the poverty reduction and social justice goals of both partner organizations, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and promotes energy independence.
RREAL strives to make solar power accessible to people of all income levels. Through its solar assistance program, RREAL installs free solar-powered heating systems on homes of low-income families who qualify for energy assistance.
Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity strives to build simple, decent, affordable housing. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build the houses.
To sponsor a low-income family for the 2009 season, see the RREAL Web site at www.rreal.org or call (218) 587-4753.
