CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Thomas H. Miller, 76, Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Brainerd, died Friday, May 25, 2001.
He was born April 11, 1925, in Park Rapids. He graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd in 1943. He served in the Navy for three years during World War II. After his Navy service, he entered the newspaper business. He married Jean Neil on June 25, 1947. He worked at The Brainerd Daily Dispatch from 1946-1948. He earned national, regional and state awards for his writing. As owner, editor and publisher of the Cherokee Daily Times from 1969-1982, the paper was twice named the Newspaper of the Year by the Iowa Press Association and received national recognition with the Missouri University School of Journalism Award. He was named Master Editor-Publisher by the Iowa Press Association. He was a board member of the Cherokee Industrial Corp. for 10 years, two of those years as president, was president of the Cherokee Rotary Club and member of the Sanford Museum Association board, the Cherokee adult education program board, the Chamber of Commerce board and the Cherokee County fund board. He was also a member of the State of Iowa Right to Read Council, the State of Iowa Adult Education Council and the Western Iowa Tech Adult Education Council. He was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest honor accorded by the Boy Scouts for more than 25 years of volunteer work. He was also recipient of the Annual Merit Award by the Iowa Association for Public Continuing and Adult Education and received the Contribution to Education Award from the Cherokee Education Association. After retiring from the newspaper business in 1984, he was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives. He served five terms until stepping aside in 1994.
Survivors include four daughters, Kathleen Johannsen, Winfred, S.D., Deborah Hankens, Cherokee, Michele Jones, Waterloo, Iowa, and Mary Bos, Stillwater; seven sons, Mark, Sioux Falls, S.D., Vince, Bonney Lake, Wash., James, Madison, Wis., Steve, Lake Zurich, Ill., Scott, Kingwood, Texas, Paul, Westminster, Md., and John, Madison, Wis.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cherokee, Iowa.
