20 years ago (1981)

A longtime resident of Brainerd, 70-year-old Archie Teigen has been actively playing the fiddle for about 10 years and in doing so, he has won awards in 41 contests. He has never had a music lesson, and can't read a single note.

30 years ago (1971)

With a band playing, flags unfurled and guns firing, Brainerd officially launched its Centennial Celebration yesterday. The ceremony was conducted at the Washington Street Bridge when the four flags which have flown over this area were put into place on the bridge.

40 years ago (1961)

Something unique in the way of a Fly-In Breakfast is planned for Sunday morning at the new air strip located on the Pine Beach Peninsula at Gull Lake. About 400 planes are expected to fly to the new 2,700 foot strip sponsored by Ruttger's Pine Beach Lodge and the Crow Wing Flying Club.

60 years ago (1941)

Registration of men who have become 21 years old since Oct. 16, 1940, will add approximately 250 Crow Wing County youth to the list of those eligible for compulsory military training under the selective service act.

80 years ago (1921)

Notice:

The Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers International Union No. 14 of Brainerd, Minn., has lowered its scale of wages to $1.12 1/2 per hour effective June 1, 1921.

100 years ago (1901)

While Brainerd is not having a phenomenal growth, or what is known as a boom, yet it is enjoying a healthy growth this season. Building is more permanent, solid and substantial character than 1882.
