The Cass County Sheriff's Department reported a variety of crimes between May 19-25, including property damage of a fence and a burglary in Sylvan Township, a theft from an East Gull Lake business and property damage of a road and bike trail in East Gull Lake, theft of tools from a construction site in Cass Lake and property damage to a door in the city, a theft from a residence in Walker and the theft of a canoe in Lake Shore.

BURGLARIES - Shawn Jarvela, 800 block of 11th Avenue Northeast, Monday reported his apartment broken into.

Firefighters respond to call Monday
The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the woods, with flames 30 feet high, at 6:43 p.m. Monday on County Highway 3, but the fire turned out to be a recreational one and the firefighters returned to quarters.

AT3 Raynor Blum, son of Kevin and Jan Blum, Brainerd, and grandson of Ray and Gladys Norrgard, Brainerd, recently graduated as a flight engineer from the U.S. Navy's training facility in Jacksonville, Fla., after a year of study. He has orders for Hawaii.

Due to incorrect information provided the Dispatch, a Page 1A story in Tuesday's newspaper incorrectly identified the woman who died after suffering burns in her kitchen as Cora Hunter, 87, Crosslake. The woman should have been identified as Clara Hunter, 88, Merrifield.

Open Forum
On May 8, the Minnesota House of Representatives recognized the anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, the day the World War II Allies formally accepted the surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany. We commemorated the day in an emotional ceremony recognizing several Minnesota veterans who served in World War Ii. Their stories were truly inspiring, and reminded us of the bravery and sacrifice made by members of what has come to be known as "The Greatest Generation."
Impressions of Memorial Day
I participated in Brainerd's Memorial Day Parade today as a member of the Blue Star Mothers organization. As a new resident of this community, everything was unfamiliar to me: the location and route, the town's people and dignitaries involved, and how the ceremony would unfold. But the thing I was most unfamiliar with was the emotions I felt throughout the proceedings.

The Brainerd School Board and administration made a major misstep when they chose to add a new program rather than offset reductions in existing programs. Regardless of the potential benefits of all day every day kindergarten, expansion of the program to all schools is a tragic blunder.
