MONTGOMERY (AP) -- A sixth-grader from Montgomery-Lonsdale Middle School is among 250 students who will compete this week in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee.
Eric Iverson has studied 5,000 words in the last several months in preparation for the bee, which was scheduled to begin Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
"Every night, my dad and I work through words," he said. "Some of them, I have no idea what they mean, but I can spell them."
Eric earned the trip to Washington by winning his class and school spelling bees and then winning the regional championship at a spelling bee sponsored by the Free Press of Mankato.
