Pequot girls win title on final hole

FERGUS FALLS -- An Ashley Meschke par and a Pelican Rapids double bogey on the final hole helped the Pequot Lakes Patriots repeat as the Section 6, Class 1A girls' golf champions Tuesday.

Meschke led the Patriots with an 82 and Kim Larson chipped in with an 86. Ali Gravdahl shot a career-best 87, helping Pequot score a team-low 344.

Team scores -- 1-Pequot Lakes 344, 2-Pelican Rapids 346, 3-Menahga/Sebeka 393, 4-Henning 412.

Ranger girls

win section title

GRAND RAPIDS -- Sam Welle's third-place 85 and Sarah Uglem's fifth-place 91 helped the Crosby-Ironton Rangers win the Section 7, Class 1A girls' golf tournament at Pokegama Golf Course Tuesday.

The Rangers return to the state tournament for the fourth time in five years.

Hanni Johnson fired a 93 and Kate Gaffney's 95 rounded out C-I's 364.

Joe Bauer of Crosby-Ironton shot a 5-over-par 76 to finish in a tie for second and qualified for the boys' state tournament. Ricky Aulie of C-I shot an 81, missing state by two strokes, and teammate Mike Simmonds 89.

S-M boys, Grieme qualify for boys' state meet

FERGUS FALLS -- Led by Travis Wilson's 73 and Isaac Landecker's 74, the Staples-Motley Cardinals boys' golf team captured the Section 6, Class 1A team championship Tuesday at Fergus Falls.

All six Cardinal golfers shot under 80 for a season-low 299.

Mike Grieme of Wadena-Deer Creek also qualified for state as an individual, carding a 74.

Team scores -- 1-Staples-Motley 299, 2-Minnewaska Area 302, 3-Perham 306, 4-Morris Area 315.

Medalist -- Luke Martin (Morris Area) 68.

Virnig finishes one stroke shy of state tournament

COLD SPRING -- Doug Virnig of Pierz finished one stroke shy of advancing to the Class 1A state boys' golf tournament after carding a 78 in the Section 5, Class 1A tournament Tuesday.

Pierz's Mark Seelen finished with an 89.

In the section girls' tournament, Kim Stangl shot a 93 and Beckie Loidolt fired a 103 for the Pioneers.
