BARROWS -- A beautiful full moon was in view from the grandstands at North Central Speedway where 108 cars registered to compete Saturday.
The full moon was also a sign that a wild and woolly night was to come and Saturday night was no exception.
The third heat in the pure stocks saw several hard encounters with the wall. Shelly Young hit the front stretch retaining wall so hard that she moved the concrete wall back, away from the track. Young re-fired her car and returned to the track to finish third.
There was a scary moment during the pure stock B feature as Don Welsh rolled and landed on his roof. He climbed from the car and walked off the track to applause from the crowd.
The first feature on the card saw 20 Midwest modifieds ready for battle. George Mattson jumped to an early lead from his front-row starting spot until the caution flew on the tail of lap 1. When racing resumed, Mattson again checked out on the field and picked up the feature win and clean sweep for the night.
Midway through the modified feature, scorer Jean Mass received a message that her mother had just suffered a heart attack. Becky Rittenour, a Princeton Speedway scorer, happened to be in the crowd and was paged to take Mass' spot.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jean and her family," speedway owner Cliff Sasker said.
The super stocks rolled out onto the track for their feature event. There was some good, tight racing until the first caution of the event flew on lap six.
It was complete chaos after that as the caution flag was waved four times. When steady, green-flag racing finally resumed, a close race ensued between Tim Johnson, Shawn Fletcher and Brad Jensen. Johnson picked up the feature win and continued his hot streak at both North Central and Princeton speedways.
In the street stock feature, Charlie Beens picked up the lead at the drop of the green with Mark Johnson on his bumper. The two had broken away from the field as those in the fourth through eighth spots jockeyed back and forth for position.
The second caution of the race was waved, bunching the field back up and as the race continued, the top three of Beens, Johnson, and Don Willard distanced themselves from the rest of the pack.
Beens took the checkered flag and brought home his first-ever feature win at NCS.
Pure stocks were the fourth and final feature of the night. Brian Johnson jumped out in front at the start as the cars behind him stacked up two and three wide.
The first yellow of the event flew as Marc Miller spun into oncoming traffic. With Johnson entering pit row with a flat tire, Mike Japp leapfrogged into the lead and hung on to take the checkered.
