SAUK CENTRE - Sean Halverson kept Brainerd's streak intact by tying for second in the Section 8-3A final Tuesday at Greyston and advancing to the Class 3A state tournament.
Halverson shot nines of 37-37 to finish with a two-day 149. Chris Sholts of Alexandria fired a 146 to win the section title, while Moorhead leaped past Alexandria to win the team title.
Halverson's 74 followed his opening-round 75 Monday.
"I wasn't striking the ball that well, but I just hit a few good shots when I really needed them," said Halverson. "I had a few chips that saved quite a few strokes. My putting was a lot better than the previous day. I've been working on shortening my swing. I hit my putts a lot more solid. I didn't make a lot of them, but I was putting better."
Halverson's 149 led the Warriors to fifth place as a team. Moorhead's winning score was 607 followed by Alexandria's 617, Rogers' 620 and Fergus Falls' 628.
Brainerd's Sean Halverson tied for second in the section tourney to advance to state.
Alex, Rogers and Fergus were all ranked in the state's top 10 and Moorhead didn't participate in the ranking system.
"The beginning of the year we felt like it was a big rebuilding year,' said Warrior head coach Brian Wallace. "It turned out they really built quickly. In the end we were right there with some of the best teams in a very tough section. I hope they're really proud of what they did."
Brainerd shot a 317 Tuesday. Michael Monda finished 19th thanks to a 75 Tuesday for a 161.
"I asked him about his round and he said everything seemed easy and everything fell into place," said Wallace. "He was hitting greens and hitting a few putts. He had 15 pars and three bogeys."
Jackson Ronnei finished 30th with a two-day 166. Michael Foley was 44th with a 171 and Tommy Olson finished one shot back with a 172. Tim Thorson carded a 183.
Halverson keep's Brainerd string of seven-straight years of having a representative at the state tournament.
Zack Lundbolm started the streak in 2003. Jared Hoppe went the next two years followed by Mitch Means and Curt Carlson in 2006. Carlson went again in 2007, while Tyler Monda finished 22nd last year.
"I'm honored," said Halverson. "It's cool to have someone from our program represent us every year. In the years to come hopefully we can get a team down there."
With all but one player back from this year's team Halverson's wish could come quicker than many expected.
"I think it shows everyone when you don't worry about what happens during the season and work toward that last tournament when it counts that we can play and compete with all the good teams up here," Halverson said.
