May 28 is Memorial Day. A special day to honor our veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms of speech, religion, assembly, the press and the sanctity of the home.
It is a special day for a ceremony at the Mississippi River Bridge at 8:30 a.m. to honor the men at sea.
It is a special day to honor the men in all branches of service at the All Vets Memorial next to the Courthouse.
It is a special day for a ceremony at the National Guard Armory to honor the veterans who marched in the Bataan Death March.
Last, but not least, is the parade at 10 a.m., starting at the Franklin School and ending at the Evergreen Cemetery, with a program honoring all of our loved ones.
We, on the committee and those who participate appreciate the spectators who attend these ceremonies.
When the United States flag passes by, please stand, remove your hat, and place your hand over your heart to show respect. This flag represents the veterans who gave their lives in defense of this country.
This flag has graced many veterans' caskets and flew at half staff in mourning. This could have been in honor of your loved one.
When you place your hand over your heart or salute the flag, you salute a veteran who fought for your freedom.
Secretary, Crow Wing County
While voting on the Pequot Lakes School I noticed some disturbing practices.
Going to vote I showed my driver's license only to be told that I don't need that because my name was on the list as a registered voter. As I signed my name I was able to view the list of other voters who had not signed yet. Who's to say that I couldn't go out and change my coat, put on a hat and come in vote for one of these other people who hadn't voted yet? Also, people were voting with both pencils and pens. I know we're are only talking about a school here but who's to say that those ballots cast in pencil couldn't be erased and changed. I asked the lady at the sign-in desk about this and that she could do is shrug her shoulders.
After what happened in Florida last year I would think that the people responsible for our local elections would take steps to ensure its integrity. Make people show their IDs, permanent markers should be used.
