Jamie Talberg exudes confidence from her tiny freshman frame with good reason.
The Pierz Pioneers track and field athlete has been to two Class 1A state cross country meets and two Class 1A state True Team meets and has three years left.
"This is her third year on varsity track and she still is only a freshman," said Pierz head coach Craig Johnshoy. "We as coaches tend to forget that. Ever since she's been out, she's been doing very well."
Talberg won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:38.3 at the Central Minnesota Conference meet May 13. She also earned all-conference honors by winning the 3200 with a time of 12:54.7
Talberg's titles helped Pierz win the conference meet.
"I didn't know a lot of people there, but I knew I had a pretty good chance of winning," said Talberg.
On May 17 at the 1A state True Team meet in Blaine, Talberg finished third in the 1600, improving her time to 5:34.27. She finished second in the 3200 with a time of 12:00.51.
"She ran a personal best in the two-mile," said Johnshoy. "That's her personal best by 10 seconds. She's peaking at the right time. She ran the mile and two-mile and we were going to have her anchor the 4x400 relay, but she was just zapped.
"That's a lot to ask a young kid, but she never complains about how much she has to do. She ran the two-mile and 4x400 relay back-to-back at the section True Team meet, but she was just wore out at the state meet so we put in an alternate."
The freshman's goal coming into the season was to break the school record in the mile. The Pierz record is 5:20. Last year, as an eighth-grader, her best was a 5:29 but she's struggled with her times this year.
Still she's gaining confidence every time she competes. Last fall at the state cross country meet she finished 13th and earned all-state honors. She was second in the section.
"I lowered my score a lot at the state cross country meet from the year before so I thought I could do better in track and I have a lot of confidence right now," Talberg said.
