LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The misanthropic fairy-tale comedy "Shrek" earned $42.3 million to top the weekend box office, unraveling the hold of "The Mummy Returns" on No. 1.
"The Mummy" sequel, which has garnered a total of $146.5 million, took in $20.4 million in its third week.
The moody romance "Angel Eyes," the only other movie opening in wide release, opened in fourth place with $9.2 million.
The revisionist musical "Moulin Rouge" opened in limited release, playing in only two theaters -- New York's Ziegfeld and Los Angeles' Avco -- to sold-out crowds and taking in a strong $167,540, or an $83,770 average per screen.
