Dear Heloise: My father used to have a zipper wax stick. We've looked in area craft and sewing departments/stores, but no one knows what we're talking about. They all suggest beeswax. We've got plenty of beeswax, but it just isn't the same.
I'm hoping you can tell me where I can possibly find a zipper wax stick. If not, maybe you can offer another alternative. -- Deborah Fornwald, Thurmont, Md.
I don't have any info on a "zipper wax stick," but there are other alternatives.
You can try using:
a piece of paraffin or a small birthday candle;
a bar of soap;
or the lead of a pencil.
Just rub any of these over the stubborn zipper until you find the one that works closest to the zipper wax stick you are talking about. -- Heloise
P.S. If you use a pencil, be careful not to let it touch light-colored fabric, and a pencil might not help on a plastic zipper.
Dear Heloise: I've read in your column several times the hint about using a cotton-tipped swab to clean out the lint in the hair-dryer vent. My way is much faster and less aggravating.
Just put the brush attachment on the end of your vacuum hose and squiggle it around on the vent for a few seconds (be sure the hair dryer is unplugged -- H). The bristles will loosen the lint, and the suction will take it right away!
And while you're in the bathroom with the attachments on the vacuum, use it to clean out the hair and dust that have collected in the vanity drawers.
Then empty your purse and use the brush attachment to clean out all the loose hair, dust and lint in the bottom of your purse to keep it looking new. -- Adethia Rudd, Tyler, Texas
It's amazing, the dust and lint that can collect in drawers and cabinets! The vacuum is just the tool to use. You can also put old pantyhose over the nozzle and get down into a makeup drawer. -- Heloise
Dear Heloise: When my shower curtain gets dirty on the inside, I throw it in the washing machine. It didn't always come out so clean until one day when I put a bath towel in with it. That must have helped "scrub" the curtain, and it came out very clean! -- Jill Russell, Alexandria, Va.:
