Inis Mary Hayes, age 98, resident of Brainerd, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Edgewood Vista Senior Living. She was born on June 17, 1910, in Brainerd to Anthony and Sadie (Dionne) Bourassa. Inis was baptized and confirmed at St Francis Catholic Church and attended St. Francis School. She married Francis Hayes on July 9, 1929. Frank died in 1981 and had been a local barber for many years. Inis was a lifetime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, past member of the Daughters of Isabella and lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was one of the last surviving spouses of a WW I veteran. She had been employed at many local bakeries. She worked at Meyer's Ammunition Plant in Brainerd during WWII.
She is survived by her son, Wayne, and his children, Nadine Hayes, Bruce (Jeri Ward) Hayes, Terry (Dr. Bradley) Backhaus; son, Richard and daughter-in-law Betty and their children, Cathy Hayes, Wayne (Shawna) Hayes, Karen (Tom) Teale, Robin (Ron) Kuechle, Richard (Valerie) Hayes; 18 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis "Frank"; parents, Anthony and Sadie (Dionne) Bourassa; brothers, Clifford, Lawrence, Lloyd and Earl; daughter-in-law, Joanne (Stallman) Hayes; great-granddaughter, Shannon, and twin great-grandsons, Easton and Gavin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Kris McKusky officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue the hour before services at the church on Thursday.
Memorials are preferred to St. Francis of the Lakes School building fund.
