20 years ago (1989)

Retired Gen. John W. Vessey, former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, will be featured speaker at the rededication ceremonies of the Bataan Memorial. It is being moved to the new National Guard armory on Wright Street.

30 years ago (1979)

Teachers in the Brainerd School District went to the polls today for another try at selecting a bargaining agent to represent them in negotiations. An earlier election ended in a draw when one ballot was tossed out.

40 years ago (1969)

Glenn Blackford, mathematics instructor at Brainerd State Junior College, is retiring after 45 years in education. Thirty-nine of those years were in Brainerd, including stints at Franklin Junior High and Washington High School as principal.

60 years ago (1949)

Four area youths charged with burglary of a North Long Lake cabin pleaded guilty before Judge Fullerton. A magazine salesman from Dallas was found guilty of stealing clothes and money from three other magazine salesmen staying here.

80 years ago (1929)

A Chevrolet coach automobile was burned to a crisp on G Street in Northeast early today. According to Police Chief Tom Templeton oil and gasoline were poured over the car before it was ignited. A suspect with a grudge against the owner is being questioned.

100 years ago (1909)

C. Bourdon was in municipal court today charged with discharging a firearm in the city limits. The evidence showed a neighbor's rooster had attacked his children, pecking them badly. He shot the rooster and his arrest followed.
