FIFTY LAKES - A 5-year-old Fifty Lakes boy was critically injured Thursday after falling several stories into a hole intended for a basement.
The boy, Tristan Veit, was airlifted by North Air Care to North Memorial Medical Center for medical care, according to the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department.
Tristan was in critical, but stable, condition early Friday afternoon at the Robbinsdale hospital, according to a North Memorial spokesman.
A construction project was under way on the Veit property. Tristan was apparently leaning against a newly finished wall by the site when he fell through the wall and into the hole, according to the sheriff's department. An immediate 911 call was made for assistance at 6:23 p.m. Thursday.
Crow Wing County sheriff's deputies responded to the residence, along with emergency response personnel from Crosslake, Breezy Point and Emily police departments. North Ambulance, Fifty Lakes First Responders and the Fifty Lakes Fire Department also were on scene providing emergency medical and recovery efforts.
