PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Richard J. Varner, 86, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died Friday, May 16, 2008, from complications due to Alzheimer's. He was born in Garrison, Minn., and lived in Milwaukee before moving to Florida. He was a retired sheet metal worker from Milwaukee and a U.S. Army Air Forces veteran during WWII. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and an avid golfer and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma A. and Samuel A. Varner; brothers, Allen and Gail; sisters, Gladys, Freda and Bess. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Margaret C.; daughters, Roberta and Christine, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Martha, of Milwaukee; sister, Verna Hoffman, and her husband, Raymond, of Brainerd, Minn.; and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast or the Alzheimer's Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter.
