PIERZ -- James "Jim" Kummet, 59, Pierz, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at St. Cloud Hospital.
He was born Feb. 24, 1944, in Lastrup to Louis and Elaine Kummet. He graduated from Memorial High School in Pierz. He moved to Minneapolis where he attended Minneapolis Vo-Tech and continued education through Dunwoody and the Minnesota Electrical Association. He enlisted for six years in the Minnesota Army National Guard. While in Minneapolis, he married Jan Merchant on Dec. 31, 1965. They returned to the Pierz area in April 1971 and founded Kummet Electric. In 1976, he became the line supervisor for the city of Pierz in addition to his duties at Kummet Electric. He was a 30-year member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as Grand Knight on two occasions. He held offices in the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, Pierz Jaycees and the Morrison County Republicans. He also served as president of the Minnesota Electric Association. His further involvement included Crosier Apostolate, Lions, Boy Scouts, Pierz Commercial Club, Eastern Morrison County Sportsman Club, American Legion and the National Rifle Association. He and his wife were mentors to engaged couples through Couple to Couple and were instructors for marriage preparation courses.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, Lastrup; five sons, David, Howell, Mich., Paul, Princeton, Timothy, Sauk Rapids, Jay, Elko, Steven, Hillman, and Gary, Pierz; a daughter, Julie, Pierz; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Anthony Kummet, Robert Kummet and Tom Kummet; and eight sisters, Lois Przybilla, Louise Marshik, Elaine Deeg, Marian Bennett, Fran Waytashek, Judy Pohlkamp, Rose Wright and Joann McDonald.
His father and two grandchildren died earlier.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Gerald Dalseth, Father Ken Brenny, Father Al Stangl and other concelebrants. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Parish Cemetery. Memorials are preferred. Military rites will be provided by the Pierz American Legion Post No. 341. Honor guard will be 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at Brenny Funeral Home in Pierz with Christian Mothers and American Legion rosary at 4:30 p.m., Pierz Lions prayers at 6 p.m., with parish prayers at 7 p.m., and Knights of Columbus Office of the Dead prayer service at 8 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the funeral home.
