The Initiative Foundation awarded five community grants totaling $31,000 in April.
Area grant recipients include:
* Cass County: Birch Lake Association Implementation, $5,000, to implement a Healthy Lakes and Rivers Partnership management plan goal by inspecting and upgrading septic systems. Contact is John Sumption.
* Wadena Development Authority: Wadena Downtown Business Marketing Program, $1,000, to support public relations and communications efforts during a major downtown revitalization project. Contact is Jarrod Olson.
The Little Falls-based foundation seeks projects that strengthen central Minnesota communities and address barriers to economic development. Grants are available for short-term planning efforts, up to $5,000, and program implementation for single community projects, up to $10,000. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and are generally reviewed within 90 days of receipt.

Sjolulnd leaving PUC post
Brainerd Public Utilities Superintendent Walt Sjolund, 61, will retire Wednesday from his post of more than 20 years.
Sjolund, a Brainerd native, was hired for the position in March 1982 and notified the five-member public utilities board of his retirement on Thursday.
Current assistant superintendent Tom Phelps will be serving as interim superintendent until the public utilities board hires a new superintendent. The board will be accepting applications through the summer, and a decision is expected to be made in September, said Ole Howard, PUC board member.
Sjolund declined to be interviewed about his career and his retirement.
Utilities commission to meet May 27
The Brainerd Public Utilities Commission will meet 9 a.m. May 27 in the board room at 1152 Highland Scenic Drive.
The commission will discuss proposed utility rate increases.
BHS to host student program
The Brainerd High School Student of the Second Semester program will be 3:20 p.m. Wednesday in the high school cafeteria.
At the end of each semester, the high school takes time to recognize individuals who display hard work, perseverance, respectfulness and kindness.
