WASHINGTON -- It turns out that the Republican Senatorial ''Inner Circle'' isn't as exclusive as it sounds.
Sen. Kent Conrad, a North Dakota Democrat, received an invitation last week from Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott to join the circle, made up of people who donate at least $1,000 a year to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
In the letter sent to Conrad's home, Lott told Conrad he was nominated by GOP senators to serve as one of 40 members from Washington, D.C., in the ''exclusive'' Inner Circle.
''Today, I invite you to accept this honor and help Republican members of the United States Senate advance our powerful national agenda of lower taxes, less government and common sense values,'' wrote Lott, R-Miss.
''I really am honored by this,'' a chuckling Conrad said Friday. ''To have my colleagues get together and nominate me for their inner circle.... I don't think I'll be sending them any money.''
