It's sad to see the travelers in Merrifield didn't learn a thing from the death of Jack Larson. I was recently stopped behind traffic turning left where there's no passing lane on the right and cars just zoomed by me. The second incident was right in town, not far from the accident scene. Cars were stopped waiting to turn left and two cars from behind me passed us on the right! I was a lawbreaker at times too, passing on the right - I will never do it again and was hoping others would feel the same way!
Expensive project for an extra block
Thanks Brainerd for the bicycle bridge over Excelsior Road. I rode over it this weekend and it was nice and smooth. The only thing better would be if it actually went somewhere. Kind of an expensive project to extend the trail an extra block isn't it?
Just one more post office U-turn letter?
I know one should not need a sign telling you to not do something you know that is illegal, dumb and otherwise unsafe but why didn't they put the "No U-Turn" sign back when they rebuilt that street many years ago? It apparently helped. There was also a "Reduced Speed Ahead" sign on County Road 48 going east that didn't find its way back for two years after that highway was rebuilt. On Southwest Fourth the lane arrows sign going north was not put back until I called about it eight months later! It went back up in a week.
You need to get out more
Regarding our gas prices and how high they are, I find it laughable. If you travel at all (I spend a great deal of time in the five-state region) you'd know we have some of the best prices around. My wife teases me about how I have it down to a science to know exactly how many miles to get back to Brainerd so I can fill here. I traditionally see lower prices in Albertville and just outside of Moorhead in Glyndon. Get over it because our little piece of the world is a great spot to buy gas.
As a small business owner in this community, I'm often perplexed watching people's perceptions of events in our community. The school board's vote on OPEB was the only choice that (school board members) could make playing the hand that they were dealt. By the way, my research shows OPEB stands for Other Post Employment Benefits and it's not strictly teacher health insurance and retirement. It's all employees' retirement benefits.
We will have no choice
Last week the Brainerd School Board took advantage of a loophole in the law to sell bonds for $23 million plus interest without a vote by district taxpayers. This came just two years after a referendum was soundly defeated in this district so the board was fully aware that it was against taxpayer wishes. Since the board is clearly not representing its constituents we will have no choice but to remember this at election time.
A better pickup area needed
I went to pick up my grandchild at the Baxter School last Friday in the rain and lightning. There were about two dozen cars behind me waiting to pick up their child. Can't Baxter come up with a better pickup area than that? I'm sure everyone was soaked!
