VERNDALE - Matt Moenkedick was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Jay Runyan pitched three innings in relief, with four strikeouts, to help Verndale defeat Pine River-Backus 5-4 in the championship of the Pirates' tournament Saturday.
Andy Davidson was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI for the Tigers.
PR-B committed four errors to prevent the Tigers from capitalizing on Ryan Snavely's pitching performance. He went seven innings, with nine strikeouts, and allowed five runs, none of which were earned.
Clayton Cottrell came on in the seventh to pick up the win for Verndale.
In the first round, Sam Moenkedick went 3-for-3 with three runs and Ethan Kern and Cole Weber each went 2-4 as Verndale beat Lake Park-Audubon 8-2.
Caleb Seals was the winning pitcher, going seven innings with nine strikeouts and two earned runs on six hits.
Also in the first round, Andy Davidson was 2-for-3, with an RBI, and went six innings on the mound, with eight strikeouts, to help Pine River-Backus beat Ogilvie 11-1 in the first round.
Troy Griffith powered the Tigers' offense, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double to collect four RBIs.

LITTLE FALLS - Peter Suska's suicide squeeze bunt scored Ben Hanowski with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Little Falls Flyers nipped Rogers 6-5 in non-conference baseball Saturday.
Beau and Ben Hanowski and Logan Kalis were all 2-for-4 for the Flyers and Peter Suska was 2-2.
Beau Hanowski got the win in relief. In one inning he gave up two hits and no runs and walked none.
