PINE RIVER -- Pine River-Backus Youth As Resources announces Katie Anderson won a $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarship.
The Presidential Freedom Scholarship program is designed to highlight and promote service and citizenship by students and to recognize students for their leadership in those areas. Applicants must have been a high school junior or senior in the 2002-2003 school year, have contributed at least 100 hours of service in the past 12 months, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and plan to attend an institution of higher education in the United States.
Through the program, each high school in the country may select up to two students to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of outstanding leadership in service to their community. With funds appropriated by Congress, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 for each scholarship, which must be matched with $500 from the community. Pine River-Backus YAR fulfilled the community match requirement for one of these scholarships this year.
YAR invited community members to help form a selection committee.
Joe Bresnahan was the other scholarship applicant He volunteered in activities and groups, such as Family Fun Night, Project 4 Teens, Week of the Young Child, PR-B YAR and Student Council.
Anderson attended the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminar last summer. After returning, she started the Learning and Reading Together program. She successfully wrote a grant to Crow Wing Power to cover transportation costs for elderly volunteers to get to the school for this program. She also has been involved in Student Council, Prom Committee and Project for Teens.
