PEQUOT LAKES -- Travis Wilson is taller and older, but other than that it's hard to tell him from teammate and brother Cory Wilson.
The two even score the same as they both carded 78s to lead the Staples-Motley Cardinals to a first-place 321 at the Pequot Lakes boys' golf invite at Grand View Lodge's Preserve Tuesday.
The two 78s along with Isaac Landecker's 81 and 84s by Andrew Murray and Derek Orth gave the Cardinals a 17-stroke advantage over the Pequot Lakes Patriots.
Josh Thorson led Pequot with his fifth-place 79. Josh Dale followed with a sixth-place 80. Tucker Shelley fired an 89 and Nick Thomas added a 90 for Pequot's 338.
Robert Bell's fourth-place 79 pushed the Pierz Pioneers to fourth.
S-M, last year's Section 6, Class 1A champions have consistently been the top team in the area. The pressure repeating as section champions and improving last year's fourth-place finish at state hasn't hindered the Cardinals' game.
"We have a lot of confidence that we're going to step it up," said Travis Wilson. "We have a lot of great potential. Our teammates are really good and we just have to practice and bear down and hopefully we'll do good."
By way of a scorecard playoff Travis Wilson nipped his younger brother Cory. It took the second hardest hole to split the two scores.
"I hit seven (greens in regulation) on the front and lots of two putts," said Travis Wilson. "I took a lot of pars. On the back nine I made a lot of good short putts coming back for pars so I played pretty good."
Travis Wilson finished with 13 pars, a birdie on the par-5 first hole, three bogeys and a triple bogey. The triple happened on his last hole, deflating the senior's triumphant moment.
"I played really decent until my last couple of holes," said Travis Wilson. "I took that triple on that last hole to shoot 78 so I was a little disappointed. I shanked a tee shot into the woods and from there it just wasn't good."
Wilson couldn't blame the weather. Little breeze, sunny skies and temperature in the 70s provided the best weather S-M has played in so far this season.
"Every day you have to play different shots depending on the weather, but (Tuesday) was just nice," said Travis Wilson. "You just hit your shots and place the ball in the fairway and you could shoot a decent score. This is a nice course and if you place the ball well, you're going to shoot decent."
