Postal customers in the Brainerd/Baxter area donated a record 9,328 pounds of food for Stamp Out Hunger on May 12, an annual food drive by Brainerd area letter carriers and mail route drivers, said organizer John Weinhandl, who is also a letter carrier in northeast Brainerd.
"It was absolutely phenomenal," said Weinhandl. "We've collected the most food we've ever collected."
Len Loukota (left), who celebrated his last day of work May 12, retiring after 34 years with the postal service, joined Kris Szabo and John Weinhandl in front of the food they collected and presented to the food shelf.
Weinhandl said they doubled the amount of food they collected last year. Food was picked up on mail routes by Brainerd letter carriers May 12 and then donated to the Salvation Army food shelf in Brainerd. Crosby area letter carriers donated food to the Crosby food shelf.
"The food shelf couldn't thank everybody enough for their kindness and contributions," said Weinhandl.
