Landscaping students dress up Wausau Paper entrance

Posted: Wednesday, May 18, 2005

Using a design created by Central Lakes College honor student Julie Conroy, the advanced landscape design class at CLC has given a face-lift to the main entrance of the Brainerd Wausau Paper plant on Mill Avenue.

Conroy, who received her landscape technology diploma from CLC last week, earned $500 from Local 63 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union. PACE had sponsored the contest among CLC students of Jeff Dirks.

"We put everyone's drawings (for a proposed spruce-up) in a line out in the hall, and the union chose Julie's. That's what we followed as we modified the base around the Wausau plant sign," said Dirks.

The plan called for a double layer of landscape blocks circling the sign with a variety of shrubs, flowering trees and grasses suitable to this climate and the specific site. Conroy, a Minnetonka native who will move to St. Cloud for her first job in landscaping, listed the plantings:

Red osier dogwood, spreading juniper, spirea, weigela, summer sweet, and maiden grass.
