COLD SPRING - Strong winds didn't stop senior Curt Carlson from shooting an even-par 72 Monday at Rich Springs Golf Club to lead the Brainerd Warriors to a first-place tie in Central Lakes Conference boys' golf.
The fourth-ranked Warriors' 306 tied them with Alexandria, but more important kept them 12 points ahead of Alexandria heading into the final conference meet next MondayBrainerd's Mitch Means shot 76 and Sam Holland and Jack Freeman both shot 79s.
"The wind was extremely tough today," said Warriors coach Brian Wallace. "Curt started out real solid and kept it going. He didn't let the wind conditions bother him. He made a couple of birdies and a couple of bogeys and ended up with even par."
The first-place tie pushed Brainerd's conference point total to 77.5. Alexandria is second with 65.5.
"Jack and Sam both had good rounds. To shoot below 80 on a course they only play once and in these types of conditions says a lot," said Wallace. "Jack looked like he was focused on what he was doing. He battled the wind and he came through as one of our four counters. Again this just goes to show the depth of this team."
