Our Opinion: TV money
Network television officials tell the NBA how late their paying fans will have to wait for the game to start and the NBA meekly complies. Even though paid attendance represents a substantial part of an NBA team's revenue, there's no question that TV money pays the freight.

Open Forum: Where does the buck stop?
I hear and read of the prisoner abuse with some interest. I spent 20 years in the military during which it was common knowledge that if you ended up in the brig or the stockade you would more than likely suffer abuse.

VOX POP
Managers of restaurants, take charge. If you're going to take your children to nice places or any place out to eat, teach them how to behave. If not, then managers should take charge. Recently we stopped for a buffet.

Open Forum
Until recently, the person I most closely related with the war in Iraq was Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was the former Arizona Cardinal who gave up a multi-million dollar salary, and then ultimately his life, for his country. He gave up his life as an NFL football player because for him it was the right thing to do. He wanted to serve his country.

Our Opinion: Veterans
The American public, divided on the war and weary from the tumultuous political events of the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely ignored the Vietnam vets. Few parades or welcome home banners greeted those who served in that Southeast Asian conflict. Some vets were even treated with hostility when they returned home.

Our Opinion: Government
They had to balance safety concerns pointed out by the county engineer with aesthetic concerns pointed by area residents.

A little good news
It seems as if there was no escaping the bad news in the headlines during the past week. While it's never wise to stick one's head in the sand, there's a saturation point that's reached and even skeptical journalists feel a need for enlightenment, a little encouragement and inspiration.

NORTH COUNTRY CALENDAR
May 29 -- Bass fishing opens

DANCE PARTY
AITKIN -- I rise before dawn and see stars through the kitchen window. Were it overcast I'd be tempted to climb back under the covers, but a clear sky means I must get moving if I'm to see the mating dance of the sharptail grouse.

The mallard in the maple, Part I
While sitting at the dining room table I glanced out the window and saw a pair of mallards land in the yard. Eager for a distraction from the pile of papers I was sorting, I watched the couple waddle about, skirt the edges of a spruce and circle a massive maple that shades the west side of our house.

Outdoors notes
To prevent too many walleyes from being harvested during the first two weeks of the season, Little Birch Lake in Todd County and the Gull River in East Gull Lake will be closed to fishing from May 15 through May 28.

The times are a-changin'
It used to be hip to show everyone your stringer of big fish. But with the advent of catch-and-release, or selective harvest, fishing is changing. We still like to show off our catches, but a Polaroid or digital photo gets the point across. There still are "hogs" who catch and keep as many big fish as they can, but they're part of a crazy world we can't control.

Spring tree planting time is underway in Minnesota

A rose by any other name
This phrase has been in my mind for several months now. It was written by William Shakespeare in his play, "Romeo and Juliet." I didn't know the origin before writing this article. Common theme: Should new desktop replace laptop?
But that's changing. Laptop prices have dropped significantly -- mostly because of a decline in the cost of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) -- the most expensive component of a portable machine. Laptops are still more expensive than desktop machines with similar performance, but the gap is shrinking.

Favorite Vacation Photo
Arne Robertson, Brainerd, submitted this picture as his Favorite Vacation Photo. It's a cliff 500 feet above the Pacific Ocean near Cape Meares State Park, which is near Tillamook, Ore. He liked this picture because the ocean is a place where he can look out and see for miles. He thought a person would probably never see anything more beautiful on the earth.
