Brainerd police officers were forced to shoot and kill a bear about 2 a.m. at Seventh and Kingwood Streets. Efforts to scare the bear out of the residential neighborhood were unsuccessful.

Arrests and charges are pending here following investigation into several cabin and business break-ins, according to the Crow Wing County Sheriff's office. Two adults and two juveniles from the metro area are to be charged.

Friday the 13th may have been just another day to the average American, but it was dooms day for an alleged Army deserter living in west Brainerd. The man, who deserted in 1942 and worked here as a grocery deliveryman, is now behind bars.

Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Houghton and son, Howard, of Riverside Calif., arrived in Brainerd after a motor trip of seven days. They averaged 330 miles per day for a total of 2,349 miles.
100 years ago (1909)
George West says he was misunderstood by the Dispatch reporter in a previous story. He is not discontinuing his restaurant but only dropping the 25-cent meals, as he cannot make money on them.
