Smith to attend pageant
BLOOMINGTON -- Chantel Amanda Smith, daughter of Scott and Shiela Smith of Brainerd, will be a state finalist in the National American Miss Minnesota Pageant Aug. 7-8 in Bloomington.
Smith's activities include volleyball, basketball, softball, dancing, drawing and painting. She enjoys riding horses and helping people and friends.
Race for the Cure chairs announced
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation named John Schaubach as honorary chair and Mary Boran as survivor chair of the Brainerd Lakes Race for the Cure, which is scheduled July 2.
Lakes and Woods Horticultural Club plant sale set
AITKIN -- The Lakes and Woods Horticultural Club's seventh annual plant sale will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. May 21 at the Jaques Art Center in Aitkin. Starter plants, vegetable and flower seedlings, annuals and perennials, bulbs and transplants, and lots of hostas will be available. No early sales. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer gardening questions.
Jaques Art Center's pie sale also is that day, and slices or entire pies may be purchased.
The Lakes and Woods Horticultural Club meets 7 p.m. the first Monday of every month at the Mille Lacs Electric Cooperative meeting room in Aitkin and is affiliated with the Minnesota State Horticultural Society.
Future meeting topics include perennials, nature printing and basic types of floral arrangements. Activities planned include several community beautification projects, a tour of area gardens and the Aug. 13 professionally judged horticultural show, which also will include a plant and produce sale. BAXTER -- The Baxter Lions will have a spaghetti supper and bake sale from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Baxter School. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for 12 and under, and free for children 5 and under. Tickets are available from Baxter School fifth-graders, at the door and from Baxter Lions members. Proceeds will help fund Baxter fifth-grade field trips.
