Siblings need partners
Mary, 12, and Mark, 9, are brother and sister both waiting for Kinship Partners. They live with their mom and older brother, Jim. They both have had ups and downs in life. Dad uses drugs and Jim has had truancy problems making for a household that has been in upheaval at different times.

CROSSLAKE -- In a special meeting Thursday, the Crosslake City Council argued whether planning and zoning complaints should be handled by staff members or the council.
Short-term closure planned for Morrison County Road 48
Beginning Tuesday, the first of two short-term closures of Morrison County Road 48 will get under way as crews begin hauling grading material to construct the roadway for the four-lane expansion of Highway 371, the Minnesota Department of Transportation reported.

Kenneth 'Butsy' H. Leonard, Brainerd, passed away May 10, 2005, at his daughter's home in Brainerd. He was born in Brainerd, Minn., to Franklin and Ruth (Wachols) Leonard on July 3, 1919. He married Ann Dehling on June 7, 1939, in Mason City, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a meat cutter for many years in the Brainerd area.

Carol Joyce Fluck was born on Jan. 12, 1932, in Buffalo, Minn., the daughter of Glen and Edith (Persian) Ward. She grew up and graduated from high school in Buffalo. On March 17, 1951, she was united in marriage to Harvey K. Fluck after they eloped to Iowa. To this union three daughters, Beth Kay, Cheryl and Cindy, were born. Harvey and Carol were able to share 42 years of marriage before he died on Nov. 9, 1993.

Kenneth Joseph Weibel, born in Cologne, Minn., on May 18, 1934, passed away May 12, 2005. Ken grew up and went to school in the Cologne area. He served two years in the Marine Corps and continued living in the same area. He was employed by Northern States Power Co. for 35 years.

James W. Eue, age 56, resident of Brainerd, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis. Jim was born in Brainerd Dec. 6, 1948, to Ronald and Donna (Chisholm) Eue. He married Loretta Wolvert at St. Mathias Church June 29, 1968. He worked as a stucco contractor owning Building Improvers. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

She is survived by husband, Arnold; son, Michael (Alma) Emerson, Blaine; daughter, Sandra (Jerry Olson) Shepard, Crosby; brother, Virgil (Norma) Lehmann, Aitkin; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Perhaps the most important bill a pro-life family (that's us) must challenge in this year's Minnesota Legislative session deals with funding for stem cell research. The House Democratic caucus has formed a committee whose job is to make H.F. 13 more acceptable to the public, so it can sneak it through, last minute, in this year's session.

I am floored that the citizens picked up the tab for Mary Koep to stay at a hotel room for a night. How ridiculous. Doesn't Mary Koep speak of fiscal responsibility and conservatism in spending? Apparently when it comes to wasting taxpayers' funding she is not so fiscally responsible. This is another example of needed change on the Brainerd City Council. What a circus.

Well apparently the other faction down at city hall is at it again. They still have one member on the council that believes in researching issues before making his decision on which way to vote. He doesn't believe in just voting for an issue because it is "recommended approval" by the administrator.

Wall-to-walleye opportunities abound at state's large lakes
Many of the anglers who were expected to crowd the highways in the hours before Saturday's fishing opener were heading for one of Minnesota's largest lakes. Cass, Kabetogama, Lake of the Woods, Leech, Mille Lacs, Pepin, Rainy, Vermilion and Winnibigoshish produce many of the 3 to 4 million walleye harvested annually in the state.

Vreeland was accepted to Officer Candidate School in January. He is currently continuing his studies in Quantico, Va., and will complete his MOS in October. He will receive his assignment with the Marine Corps following his graduation.

Steve Lehman of Aitkin visited Ucluelet and said it is an ancient settlement on the northern edge of Barkley Sound. Ucluelet takes its name from the Nuu-chah-nulth people's phrase, Yu-clutl-ahts, the people with a good landing place for canoes.
