BAXTER -- Just in time for the walleye/northern pike fishing opener, a Baxter church seized an opportunity to reflect on the beauty of God's creation.
A handful of boats were brought to the Lord of Life Lutheran Church parking lot last Saturday for the Blessing of Boats and Boaters, an event Lord of Life hadn't done before.

Last fall the church had a blessing ceremony for hunters, and the Rev. Darrell Pedersen said he wanted to use the fishing opener as a reason to gather together and be thankful for the gifts of nature -- water, wildlife, fish and birds.
"This is an opportunity to enjoy God's creation and provide safety for boaters," Pedersen said.
Lord of Life's stewardship team came up with the idea of blessing boats and boaters, with the intent of reminding people about how they use and care for the gift of life and creation.
