On this day in the Brainerd lakes area
60 years ago (1944) - Water is laying about a foot deep across the road on the Scenic Highway in west Brainerd it was reported by Bob Campbell, city engineer. The road is under water for about 500 feet and is impassable. The river has risen to nearly seven feet due to heavy rains.

Frolicking again
When the Geritol Frolics return to Brainerd this fall, the 55-and-older variety show might be a little fruitier than in past years. Writer-director Ed Yunker had intended to borrow segments from previous shows. Then fresh ideas started to come to him.

She worked for the McCormick dental office as an oral surgeon's assistant, retiring in 1980.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 255 will be offering poppies once again on May 14. Every day our military personnel are in harm's way, today our men and women are still fighting for freedom in Iraq. We must continue to work to help those who have served and are serving today for the freedom we enjoy.

Until recently, the person I most closely related with the war in Iraq was Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman was the former Arizona Cardinal who gave up a multi-million dollar salary, and then ultimately his life, for his country. He gave up his life as an NFL football player because for him it was the right thing to do. He wanted to serve his country.

60 years ago (1944) - The Brainerd airport, located southeast of the city, closed under Federal order since the beginning of the war, was opened Sunday under approval of the Civil Aeronautics Authority. Permission to open the field was received by B.R. Garrett, manager.

Our Opinion: TV money
Network television officials tell the NBA how late their paying fans will have to wait for the game to start and the NBA meekly complies. Even though paid attendance represents a substantial part of an NBA team's revenue, there's no question that TV money pays the freight.

This phrase has been in my mind for several months now. It was written by William Shakespeare in his play, "Romeo and Juliet." I didn't know the origin before writing this article.
