Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers owner and general manager Joel Sutherland announced Monday that four players have signed contracts to play for the Lunkers this summer.
The Lunkers inked three freshman utility players in Long Beach State's Derek Legg, Florida International's Mike Martinez, and Ohio Dominican's Zach Stewart.
Also signing was Northern Colorado junior Hunter Nolan.
Legg, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound switch hitting infielder, is hitting .325 and has a fielding percentage of .962 in 42 games this year with the 49ers. Originally from Murrieta, Calif., he comes from a baseball-rich family. His brother currently plays college ball at Utah, his father played at San Diego State and his uncle played Class AAA in the Twins' organization.
Martinez, a 6-0, 200-pound outfielder, pitcher, and first baseman, is hitting .339 with six home runs and 36 RBIs in 46 games with the Golden Panthers. Martinez, who hails from Miami, has appeared on the mound three times with Florida International and has a fielding percentage of .978.
Stewart, a 5-11, 195-pound outfielder and first baseman, is hitting .333 and leads the Panthers with 17 doubles and is tied atop the team's RBI leader board with 49. The Dayton, Ohio, native has started 48 games this year as a true freshman and has a .976 fielding percentage.
Nolen is a 6-0, 185-pound catcher from Denton, Texas. In 22 games this season, he leads the Bears with a .361 batting average and .487 on-base percentage. Behind the plate, he has accounted for 96 putouts.
"The versatility that we have with this group will be very important," Sutherland said. "The ability to rotate guys between multiple positions and not lose a step defensively certainly gives us an upper hand. What they've done at the plate is impressive too. These four guys are the types of players who can excel in any situation thrown at them."
Lunkers field manager Ryan Levendoski and Sutherland will continue to build the roster until play begins later this month. The Lunkers home opener, presented by Cub Foods, is 7:05 p.m. May 28 at Mills Field.
