LAKE HUBERT - John W. Turcotte, age 86, Lake Hubert, Minn., formerly of Mendota Heights and Minneapolis, died of prostate cancer May 5, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family. John, the only child of William V. Turcotte and Ella Mitchell, was born in Brainerd, Minn., Dec. 30, 1921. He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1939 and from Carleton College in 1943. He then attended Midshipman's School at Northwestern University and was commissioned in the Navy as lieutenant j.g. and served in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1952, he founded Mercury Travel Bureau in St. Paul and was active in the American Society of Travel Agents until he retired in 1985. He was a member of the St. Paul Rotary Club for 45 years where his special interest was the International Youth Exchange Program. In 1995, he wrote a history of the Club. He was currently active in the Brainerd Rotary Club and the Nisswa Garden Club.
He married Marcia Thompson in 1950. Together they enjoyed gardening, attending Minnesota Orchestra concerts and the many years of travel that took them to all seven continents. Surviving are his wife; and four children, Jacqueline (Michael) Burkey, Brainerd, Suzanne Turcotte, Nisswa, Sally (Paul) Jacobsen, Brainerd, William (Marlo) Turcotte, North Oaks; eight grandchildren, Andrew and William Burkey, Elisabeth, Peter and Luke Jacobsen, Nathan, John W. and Mark Turcotte.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Nisswa, Minn. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Brainerd. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 13, from 5-7 p.m. at the church. Memorials preferred to The Mayo Foundation, The Lake Hubert Conservation Association or Good Samaritan Hospice, Nisswa.
