I would like to offer my support on Mr. Weaver's stand to not issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. I don't think the reason given for issue that it will make the streets safer is a logical one. If that was the case, then perhaps we should issue licenses to 12 year olds in case they decide to take the family car out for a spin. If they are here illegally, they should not be given privileges that legal, law abiding citizens are granted. Law abiding being the key word here. I remember the slogan "driving is not a right, it is a privilege".
Please, Mr. Weaver, stand your ground. Licensing does not necessarily make a driver safer. There are illegal licensed drivers all over out there thanks to alcohol and drugs. What makes a driver a safe driver is obeying the law. An illegal immigrant is not obeying the law.
As a child of parents who emigrated to this country in 1925, I know the hardships...I also know it can be done legally and, with hard work and commitment to being a good citizen, it can be a proud, rewarding moment. Let's keep the privilege of driving contained to those who have earned it by right of citizenship.
