Warrior girls place 5th
Despite four honor roll performances and a school record the Brainerd Warriors girls' track and field team didn't handle the competition.
The Warriors placed fifth in the Section 8, Class 3A True Team meet Tuesday at Adamson Field. Grand Rapids won the meet with 734.75 points followed by Moorhead with 680.
"We just competed and that's one thing about sports is you can't control your competition," said Warriors head coach Geri Skogen. "Our girls did the best they could and they gave good efforts and that's what I expect.
"In this meet you have to try and beat someone rather than go for a personal best. Overall, they worked hard and did the best they could."
Although Brainerd had a difficult time beating someone else the Warriors did manage to break some school marks. Sarah Bernu threw the discus 107 feet to place her on the honor roll and finish in fourth place. Julie Pelzer's time of 17.683 in the 100 hurdles was good enough to put her on the honor roll. Beth Cairns' vault of 5 feet also placed her on the list.
One school record fell, thanks to a 8-6 effort in the pole vault by senior Crystal Yaunick.
Despite the team finish Skogen is seeing personal improvement on the team.
"We've improved a lot and we're dropping time all the time," said Skogen. "But again our competition seems to be one step ahead of us.
"Hopefully we'll continue to have good practices and get into these big meets. You need depth in this meet. Your first through third people there can't be a lot of difference. Some events we're stronger than others."
Other top finishers for Brainerd were Molly Zauhar's fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles and Pelzer's third-place finish in the 300 hurdles.
