Flyers' Miller makes Select team

Nate Miller of Little Falls High School has been chosen to participate in the Minnesota Select Summer basketball program.

Top players from around the state were chosen throughout regional and final cuts in early April. The Minnesota Select team will participate in national tournaments in Minnesota, Kentucky, Las Vegas, and California from June 29-July 26.

Final booster meeting Thursday

Brainerd Warriors boys' tennis coach Bruce Thompson will speak at the final meeting of the Brainerd Sports Boosters Club for the 1999-2000 school year at noon Thursday at the Moose Lodge.

Baseball player Matt Yde, the Warrior Athlete of the Week, will be honored.

Mighty Gulls sign USC catcher

The Brainerd Mighty Gulls of the Northwoods League have signed switch-hitting catcher Rick Helland of the University of Southern California.

Helland is a 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore who is red-shirting due to an injury at USC this season.

Helland played at Ventura College in 1999 where he hit .406 and set a team record with 61 hits during the season.

He played at Buena High School where he hit .395 and was 8-1 as a pitcher in his junior season. Helland hit .457 with seven home runs in his senior season.

BMX track work days scheduled

The new Brainerd Lakes BMX track is almost ready but is looking for volunteers to ensure the track will be ready by May 21.

Anyone who would like to help with the track work days are scheduled for Thursday, May 11, at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 16, at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 17, at 5:30 p.m.

Spirit boys' basketball team runner-up

The Minnesota Spirit seventh grade boys' basketball of Brainerd finished second in the North St. Paul tournament last weekend.

Brainerd beat the Richfield Spartans (II) 50-26 and beat Apple Valley 41-39 in three overtimes before losing to the Richfield Spartans (I) 62-49.

Team members were Lucas Brick, Curtis Asfeld, Spencer Sundberg, Cameron Burney, Clinton Strother, Mike Stoe and Ryan Forcier. Sundberg totaled 39 points in the tournament, Stoe 25 and Brick 24.

JV tennis team beats Tech

The Brainerd Warriors junior varsity tennis team defeated St. Cloud Tech on Tuesday.

Singles winners for Brainerd included Sridhar Raju, Mark Norman, John Benson, Brent Bourassa and Matt Smith. Among the doubles winners was the team of Elliott Ross/Jake Bertschi.
