The Mississippi Headwaters Board is sponsoring training workshops for interviewers and storytellers who would like to participate in an oral history project titled "Voices of the River, Tributaries from the Past."
The Mississippi Headwaters Board hopes to collect and preserve, through tape recorded interviews, unique and valuable information about the Mississ-ippi Headwaters history. Presenters will be Pat Oliver, oral history project coordinator, and Ray Nelson and/or Terry Larson, members of the Mississippi Headwaters Advisory Committee and oral history interviewers.
Financial support for the workshop is provided by the Minnesota Historical Society, Minnesota Power and the Mississippi Headwaters Board.
The workshop will cover how to prepare for the interview, use of recording equipment and forms to document the interview, development of interview questions, post-interview follow-up and suggestions for bringing out the stories in the interview.
Oral history training workshops are scheduled at 1:30 p.m. May 22 in the Bemidji Public Library Meeting Room, 509 America Ave. N.W., Bemidji; 1:30 p.m. May 25 at the Headwaters Inn, just north of Itasca State Park on County Road 2 and Highway 200; and at 2 p.m. May 31 at the Brainerd Senior Center, 213 S. Fifth St., Brainerd.
There is no cost for the workshop. For more information or to register for the workshop, call the Mississippi Headwaters Board Office at 547-7248 or Pat Oliver at 963-4595. Clubs and/or organizations interested in a talk or short information session may call the above numbers to schedule.
