The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers announced Friday the hiring of the College of Santa Fe's Jeff Hanson as the pitching coach for the Lunkers' inaugural season.
Hanson, in his first season as the assistant coach/pitching coach for the Prairie Dogs, brings plenty of coaching and playing experience to the table.
He served as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, and was head coach of the Bolivar A's of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. He also served as the bullpen coach at his alma-mater, North Park University in Chicago.
The 2004 North Park graduate set school records in innings pitched, strikeouts and pickoffs. He was named Academic All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and won the CCIW's Merle Chapman Leadership Award his senior year.
He spent two summers playing in the Alaska Baseball League, and in 2003, had the league's sixth-lowest ERA at 1.73. The Northern California native also threw the first no-hitter in Ygnacio Valley High School history.
The Lunkers' home opener is May 28 when they host the St. Cloud River Bats at Mills Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
