Dean P. Sanford

AITKIN - Dean Paul Sanford, 82, of Aitkin, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at his residence. He was born Dec. 16, 1926, in Boise, Idaho, to Roland and Edith (Lasher) Sanford.

He graduated from Aitkin High School class of 1945. He attended St. Cloud Teachers College, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and a minor in physics. On June 27, 1951, in Aitkin, Dean was united in marriage to Corinne "Kim" Boudreau. He started his teaching career in Winnebago in 1950. After two years he moved to Brainerd, where he spent the next 32 years teaching junior high mathematics. In addition Dean also taught mathematics for many years at Brainerd Vo-Tech for those pursuing their GED certificates. In summers, he further supported his family by working as a paper carrier for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and selling bait. After his retirement he worked as a substitute teacher for six years.

He loved to spend time with his family at his Cedar Lake home near Aitkin. It was a perfect location since Dean was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed deer and duck hunting, ice and walleye fishing, gardening and woodcutting. He served as past state vice president of the Minnesota Federation of Teachers, a past president of the Quarterbacks Club in Brainerd, an active member of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Riceland Chapter, where he served as both past president and corporate director and as a board member of Cedar Lake Conservancy. He was also a staunch member of the National Rifle Association. Dean was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Deerwood where he served on the parish council, the church finance council, as an Eucharistic minister and was a member of the Cuyuna Range Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Brainerd.

Dean is survived by his wife, Corinne; two sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Sanford, of Minneapolis, and Tom (Steffanie) Sanford, of Aitkin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy (Kerry) MacArthur, of Houston, and Anne (Dan) Johanek, of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Rob, Mary, Phillip, Elizabeth and Anna MacArthur, Taylor and Amy Johanek, Hunter, Jeb, Wyatt, Addie, Gus and Blaise Sanford; one brother, Charles, of Falmouth, Maine

Besides many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald, and his parents, Roland and Edith.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Deerwood. Father Howard Eisel will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Aitkin. Visitation will be 4:30-7 p.m. Monday at the church and will continue one hour prior to the service. Rosary services will begin at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are by Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to St. Joseph's Church Building Fund, Deerwood.
