PEQUOT LAKES -- Stamp collectors can get a piece of history this weekend at the Governor's Fishing Opener.
The Pequot Lakes Post Office is offering a pair of special pictorial cancellation stamps to commemorate the 2001 governor's opener. On Friday, a portable post office will be set up at Trailside Information Center. Customers can buy special postcards for 20 cents apiece and have them stamped with the words "2001 Governor's Fishing Opener, Pequot Lakes, MN."
On Saturday, the portable post office moves to Breezy Point, where patrons can buy a postcard and have it stamped with "2001 Governor's Fishing Opener, Breezy Point, MN."
"Last year we had (a special pictorial cancellation) for Bean Hole Days and it was a great success," said Bernice Rhode of the Pequot Lakes Chamber of Commerce. "The post office has told us they sent a notice of this out in their newsletter. Clubs will send them envelopes with a stamp and they will hand cancel these envelopes and send them back to the clubs for their collection."
The commemorative stamps are expected to become collectible among stamp collectors, Rhode said.
Illusion Graphics created the logo, which the post office said must measure 3 inches horizontally and 1-3/4 inches vertically.
"The post office does this to promote interest in an event and to be involved," Rhode said. "There is no cost to the chamber."
