East Gull Lake spring community open house

The East Gull Lake spring community open house will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Ernie's Bar and Grill. Cost is $10 per person. There will be an open bar. An appetizer buffet with hot and cold items will be served. RSVP to the East Gull Lake City Hall by Monday at 828-9279.

Pinetree Patchworkers

BAXTER - Pinetree Patchworkers Quilt guild will meet 6:45 p.m. Monday at Lord of Life Luthern Church in Baxter. It will be a meeting to discuss next month's quilt show at Brainerd High School. There will be no formal program.

Brainerd Lakes Prostate Cancer Support Group

The Brainerd Lakes Prostate Cancer Support Group meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kerst meeting room at St. Joseph's Medical Center. The meeting will feature Walter Roberts, M.D. Dr. Roberts will discuss radiation therapy. Refreshments will be served. Meetings are free and open to men, family, friends and healthcare professionals. NARVRE meeting rescheduled

The NARVRE meeting normally held Tuesday has been rescheduled to May 18. All present and retired railroad employees, spouses, widows and widowers of railroad employees are eligible to attend.

Benefit for Peyten Hyatt and family

There will be a benefit for 6-month-old Peyten Hyatt, daughter of Dennis and Nicole Hyatt, from noon to 4 p.m. May 16 at JR's Junction in Pine Center. There will be a spaghetti lunch ($5/plate), bake sale, silent auction and more.

She underwent heart surgery on April 13 to correct a heart defect she was born with.

Upcoming events at VFW

VFW Post and Auxiliary regular meetings on will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Home Post. The meetings will open jointly with the Commander from Camp Ripley or his representative making a short presentation.

The VFW Auxiliary will serve all-you-can-eat fish from 5:50 p.m. until gone Friday. Cost is $8.

VFW Sunday breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. Cost is $5.

Local NARFE Chapter plays leading Alzheimer's research role

This year, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) will mark a quarter century of leading the fight against Alzheimer's disease. In that time, NARFE members have contributed more than $8 million to Alzheimer's research. Chapter 0738 in Brainerd has been a key part of that effort, raising money for this cause from members and local residents.

Pancake breakfast planned

Applebee's has partnered with Junior Achievement for a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8-10 a.m. May 15. Proceeds from this event will help provide JA programs throughout the Brainerd lakes area this school year. Brainerd Legion upcoming events

The Brainerd Legion Post and Unit 255 memorial service will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Legion. Family and friends of members who have died in the past year are invited to attend.

A walleye dinner by Dewayne Collins will be served from 5:30 p.m. until gone Thursday. Cost is $8.

Poppy Day is May 14. Auxiliary members will be offering poppies at many locations in the Brainerd area. A generous donation will help support veterans.

Boy Scout annual smelt and fish fry

WALKER - Boy Scout Troop 40 of Walker will be hosting its annual smelt and fish fry from 5-7p .m. Friday. This is Troop 40's only fundraiser. Donations are $10 for adults and $6 for kids 12 and under. This is an all-you-can-eat event served at the Spencer Ross Walker American Legion Post 134.

This fundraiser helps fund local Boy Scout outings especially the summer resident camp. This year, six boys will be going to Camp Many Point near Ponsford. The boys will stay for a week and participate in many scouting activities and work toward earning merit badges of their choice.

BAXTER - The Baxter Lions Club will meet Monday at Camp Vanasek with a board meeting at 6 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting at 7 p.m.

Ovarian cancer support group to meet Thursday

NISSWA - The next Ovarian Cancer Support Group meeting will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Nisswa American Legion, in the lower level meeting room, located at 25807 Main Street, Nisswa.

The meeting, sponsored by the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA, mnovarian.org), is free and ovarian cancer survivors, family members and friends are invited. Wild and Free garage sale

GARRISON - Wild and Free will have a garage sale May 14-15. Early sale hours on Friday will be from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday's hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at the Garrison VFW Hall Pavilion. There will be a large selection of household goods, gardening, sporting goods and more. All proceeds will go to the Wild and Free Wildlife Rehabilitation Program which attempts to return injured and orphaned wild animals back to their natural habitat. Lakes Area Dance Club

The Lakes Area Dance Club will hold its monthly dance on Friday at Central Lakes College (Room E101). The dance lesson will begin at 6:30 p.m. The lesson this month will be the waltz with a review of other dances. Arrive at 6:15 p.m. so that registration will be completed by the 6:30 p.m. start time. General dancing will begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. Singles and couples are welcome; partners are not required. The cost of the dance will be $5 for members, $10 for non-members and $2 for students with a current I.D.

Bridge benefit planned

CROSSLAKE - There will be a bridge benefit planned for the Mid-Minnesota Women's Center at 11 a.m. June 9 at Maucieri's on CR 3 in Crosslake. All players casual to serious are welcome. Cost is $20 for advanced registration and $25 after June 1 or at the door. Call Barb Bretz at 963-4344 for reservations. The cost includes bridge, lunch and there will be many prizes donated by area businesses.
