Work going on all over downtown

Construction continued Thursday in downtown Brainerd on the street reconstruction project.

Crews with Tom's Backhoe Service, the general contractor on the project, worked on Laurel Street as well as other downtown streets.

The first application of asphalt is expected to be installed Friday on Front Street.

Tom's Backhoe reported installation of electrical and irrigation systems as well as planters will continue through mid next week. The remainder of concrete sidewalk on Front Street should be installed by mid to late next week.

Work continues in the alleys on the east side of the project installing new sewer lines.

Mainline sewer will be completed on Laurel Street by Friday and will continue down Seventh Street between Laurel and Maple streets through next week.

Removals on the south half of Seventh Street will be completed by early next week.

New storm sewer will begin on Seventh Street and Laurel Street on Monday and continue throughout the week. Access on Front Street and Eighth Street intersection will be left open for access to the north side businesses.

Access to Laurel Street businesses will have to be from Eighth Street and from the city parking lot on Laurel Street. Alleys in the south blocks of this project will not be disturbed.

Telephone, gas and Brainerd Public Utilities crews will continue to work on upgrades of their lines throughout the project.

Groundbreaking was April 20. The reconstruction involves Front Street from South Sixth Street to Eighth Street, Laurel Street from South Sixth Street to Eighth Street, Seventh Street from Front to Maple streets and the alleys north of Laurel Street.

The $2.5 million street, streetscape and utility project is expected to be completed by the end of July.
