Eighth-grader leads field in Pequot Invite

PEQUOT LAKES - Nick Forsberg topped Class 2A top golfer and the rest of the field in Wednesday's Pequot Lakes Invitational at Grand View Lodge's The Preserve.

Forsberg, a Staples-Motley Cardinal eighth grader, shot 75 for his second straight invitational victory. He shot 75 Tuesday at Blueberry Pines to win the Menahga Invite.

In the process he also defeated Pierz's Robert Bell, the top-ranked golfer in Class 2A and last year's Class 1A runner-up. Bell shot a 4-over-par 76 to tie for second with Drake Beyer of the Pequot Lakes Patriots.

Beyer's 76 along with Jonas Dale's fourth-place 78, Cole Howard's fifth-place 84 and Matt Michaelson's eighth-place 89 landed Pequot in first place.

The Cardinals finished second. Zach Israelson placed sixth with an 86 and Josh Ulring shot 91.

Bell helped land Pierz in second. Jesse Hillyear tied for 9th with a 90 and John Virnig was one shot behind at 91.

Eric Steuck's 88 placed him seventh and Ryan Donovan tied for ninth with a 90 to lead the Crosby-Ironton Rangers to fourth.

Tyler Fix's 93 led Wadena-Deer Creek to fifth.

The Brainerd Warriors junior varsity team finished seventh and was led by Will Feyder's 92 and Tim Thorson's 94.

Matt Dragovich shot 94 to lead the Aitkin Gobblers to eighth.
