The Brainerd High School A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Brian Stubbs, took first place for the second-straight year at the Choirs of Note competition Saturday in Marshall.
Brainerd was invited as the defending champion, along with five choirs who auditioned by recording. The choirs each sang a 20-minute set, and were rated by six judges: Hilary Apfelstadt from Ohio State University, Jeffrey Douma from Yale, Jonathan Talberg from Long Beach State, David Weiller from UNLV, Judith Willoughby from Oklahoma City University and Dale Warland of the Dale Warland Singers.
During the closing concert, former BHS choral director Michael Smith was honored for his contributions to choral music in Minnesota.
The BHS Bards and Concert Chorale received superior ratings at the Region 8 large group vocal contest.
The BHS Choirs will present their Spring Pop Concert at 7:30 p.m. May 23 at Tornstrom Auditorium, Washington Educational Services Building, in Brainerd.
