ST. CLOUD - Jared Hoppe carded a 72 to tie for medalist honors as the Brainerd Warriors, who are the No. 1 ranked squad in class 2A, won the Central Lakes Conference meet at the St. Cloud Country Club Monday.
The Warriors shot a 303, finishing seven strokes ahead of second place Fergus Falls.
"For the first time seeing the course a 303 is a great score," Warriors coach Brian Wallace said. "We had some rain to deal with and we put up three really good scores so that was the difference."
Curt Carlson, who's ranked third individually in Class 2A, finished with a 74 while Tyler Monda turned in a 76.
Hoppe was 3-under par through the first nine holes but struggled a little on the back nine, shooting 3-over par to finish with an even 72.
"I went in a hazard to start with a bogey," Hoppe said. "I had a stretch there where I birdied four out of six holes to get to three-under. On the back nine I made a few bogeys coming down stretch.
"Overall I was hitting my irons pretty good. I hit every green and two putted. It was probably the easiest 72 of my life."
Wallace said one of the keys to Hoppe's round was his ability to stay out of trouble on the course.
"The back nine was pretty tough so it was great to see Jared finish at even par," Wallace said. "There's a lot of trouble on that course and he was able to keep the ball in play. His short game was real nice today as well."
