Gov. Tim Pawlenty has the ability to veto single lines in the state construction funding bill, so it is disappointing that he instead decided to veto the bill in its entirety.
Vetoing the entire bill only delays what has already been a lengthy process, and casts doubt that needed repairs to state college buildings, prisons and state buildings will be funded at all this year. Also included in the bill was flood mitigation for Browns Valley.
After missing their mandated legislative deadline in recent years, both parties are playing politics to be able to say the other caused a delay - Democrats have been sending bills they know will be vetoed to the governor, and Republicans are spending time on social issue bills that stand no chance of passage - but in this case, the governor is clearly at fault because he had a line-item veto at his disposal.
